Switzerland’s uptake of shallow geothermal continues unabated. This sector has enjoyed high growth rates in geothermal heat pumps systems in recent years and in 2022 some 2600 MW of capacity is deployed in Switzerland. The increase in capacity during 2022 amounting to some 160 MW. Direct energy use in thermal spas was some 185 GWH during 2022 and other direct geothermal uses, some of which use heat pump technology, and six operational tunnel projects, delivered some 21 GWH to the facilities / enterprises requiring heat energy.

Switzerland continues to invest in geothermal energy research, development and demonstration activities with CHF 14 million allocated in 2022.

Switzerland has established sophisticated underground research laboratories at Grimsel and at Bedretto (Photo above).

There is growing interest in underground thermal energy storage with the potential estimated at up to 6 TWh pa.
